Yoga says you are only as old as your spine. For most Americans, this means we are probably prematurely aging! Don’t be scared or worried, yoga can help support spine and whole-body health. As seniors, it is important to keep moving, find ways to engage the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga for seniors is very similar to any other type of yoga practice.
A private senior yoga class will include breathing exercises, eye yoga, balance work, and poses geared to ensure range of motion, while building strength. As with any private yoga class, it is completely tailored to the individual. Balancing poses might be as simple as being on the balls of the feet, or only standing on one leg, depending on where the person is at.
At the start of any private yoga package, we will do an evaluation and set goals for where we want to be. While we believe that yoga is an experience for life and health, we’re also big believers in tracking the things you want to acquire. So each session will keep those goals in mind and work to building on a solid foundation to achieve our goals.
Yin yoga is a form of yoga focusing on the joints, opening, lubricating and increasing movement in hips, shoulders, back and the whole body. Yin yoga is a slower paced yoga practice.
Our classes include fewer poses, but they are held for a longer amount of time. During each pose, breath and deeper release into the position are the goals. Yin yoga lessons tend to involve more props to aid in relaxing into the poses, and affirmations, meditation or mindfulness work during the session. Poses tend to be held for a minute or more depending on the student, as always the class, poses, and work is tailored to each student!
Yin yoga is great for any mobility level, age or any person wherever they are at! Yin helps to increase mobility in the joints, back, and whole body. It is also a very relaxing practice for those who are under a lot of stress during the day.
Gentle Yoga is a slower paced class. We focus on engaging all parts of the body, increasing strength, mobility, flexibility and balance but in a slower, gentler way. Gentle yoga is great for all body types, ages, and mobility levels. Don’t think this isn’t a good way to develop strength though, you still get a great ‘workout’ in!
A Gentle Yoga class can include sun salutations, transitions from the floor to standing and sitting, balance, strength building twisting poses and more. Most poses are tied to the breath for vinyasa, or flow.
Gentle Yoga is a whole body class, each lesson working to build strength, mobility, flexibility, and peace in the body.
If you have limited mobility, chair yoga can be a wonderful option! Chair yoga allows for modified poses, more support using the chair and can also be a great option to show you how to add movement into your workday!
A chair yoga class can range from gentle to an energized class.
