I initially made this video in August of 2018. I feel like now is a good time to share it with the world, since we’re facing unusual times with the COVID-19 virus spreading.
I don’t want this to appear that I’m not for using any and all means to manage your own Black Dog. I’m 100% onboard for prescriptions if that is what helps you manage. While I am not currently taking prescriptions, I have and would again if that is what I feel I need. Not everyone’s body creates enough of the chemicals needed to maintain balance.
Think of building a toolbox in which yoga, Ayurveda, and everything else are things you have available to you to help when you need it. You don’t always have to use the same tools and you can alternate them too.
Pranayama is a tool I rely on a lot. I will add it in while I am teaching, do it while driving, and pretty much any chance I get (or when I remember!). My favorite is Nadi Shadona, I’ll do a video on it soon to share with you. While I’m driving I don’t do Nadi Shadona, I simply focus on filling my belly up and exhaling all the way. Gotta stay safe while driving!
These are all things that I have found helpful, but each of us is different. Your own journey with depression is unique, but together we can find community, strength, belonging, and hopefully some lightness.
